The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) estimated that nearly 30-40 per cent of waste in a city is generated by Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs). Henceforth, the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) has augmented its efforts in waste management by defining a Bulk Waste Generator (BWG) and launching a dedicated Waste Management Portal. This initiative is aimed at facilitating the compliance of BWGs as per the Solid Waste Management Rule 2016.

Definition of a Bulk Waste Generator (BWG)

A BWG is identified as any entity that produces 50 or more kilograms of waste per day (encompassing wet, dry, and domestic hazardous waste) or has a campus exceeding 5000 square meters.

Responsibilities of BWGs

  • BWGs are obligated to efficiently manage the waste generated within their premises and the registration on the online portal is mandatory for residential, industrial, commercial and institutional units that generate the said quantum of waste or more per day.

  • The recent observations have indicated a shortfall in the sharing of waste management data with the MCG, prompting the launch of a specialized portal to streamline this process.

Waste Management Portal Details

The newly introduced portal can be accessed at https://onemapdepts.gmda.gov.in/BWG. This platform is designed to support BWGs in Gurugram, providing them with tools to report waste management data, and to avail themselves of benefits and rewards as part of their compliance efforts.

Registration and Compliance

  • All BWGs are required to register on the portal by the 30th April 2024.

  • Entities not qualifying as BWGs may claim an exemption from reporting by submitting a self-declaration on the portal.
